China announced the contribution of US $ 233 million to the biodiversity fund

Their engagement was presented during the COP15, which brings together delegates from 196 signatory countries to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in the city of Kunming, in southern China.

The meeting seeks to establish a new agreement on biodiversity with goals for 2050 and 2030.

“China will take the lead in creating the Kunming Biodiversity Fund with a capital contribution of 1.5 billion yuan ($ 233 million) to support biodiversity conservation in developing countries.”Chinese President Xi Jinping announced Tuesday at COP15.

“China calls on all parties to contribute to the fund,” he added.

Another proposal under discussion at COP15 is the 30/30 agenda, which seeks to grant protection status to 30% of the lands and oceans by 2030.

According to a UN report released in May, world expenditures for the protection and restoration of nature must increase in this decade to $ 350,000 million annually by 2030, and to $ 536,000 million in 2050, to reach the goal 30 / 30.

But some donor countries have said that a new conservation fund is unnecessary because the Global Environment Fund, of the UN, which finances projects in developing nations.

The issue will be addressed in the second part of COP15, in April and May 2022.

In his speech, Xi also criticized the United States, stating that “we must practice true multilateralism and abide by international rules, which cannot be exploited or discarded in a whimsical way.”

The CBD was ratified by 195 countries and the European Union, although not by the United States. The States Parties meet every two years.

Discussions at COP15 are separate from COP26 which begins on October 31 in Glasgow (Scotland) to discuss the global climate crisis.
