European Union will send 1 billion euros to Afghanistan as humanitarian aid

The official explained that the European Union (EU) has already clearly set out the “conditions for any engagement with the Afghan authorities, including respect for rights.”

However, he added that the “Afghan people should not pay the Taliban share price. That is why the Afghan support package is for the Afghan people and the country’s neighbors who have been the first to help them.”.

The package includes a provision of 300 million euros already approved by the EU, and also specialized supplementary aid for actions such as vaccination, reception, protection of the civilian population and respect for human rights.

These resources will be destined to directly support the local population and will be channeled to international organizations that already operate in those regions.

The Union’s global aid for development in Afghanistan, meanwhile, remains frozen, the European Commission noted.

It has five basic criteria for resuming relations with the new Afghan government, and in its note on Tuesday it recalled that these objectives “must be met before regular development cooperation can be resumed.”

Thus, in order for cooperation with the EU to be resumed, the Taliban must respect fundamental human rights, in particular the rights of women; the Afghan government must be inclusive, and must allow access to humanitarian aid, among other issues.

The need for humanitarian aid to Afghanistan is the subject of an extraordinary meeting of the G20 organized this Tuesday by the Italian government.

On the other hand, representatives of the Taliban, the EU and the United States began this Tuesday a round of talks in Doha, Qatar, as part of the diplomatic effort to remove Afghanistan from its international isolation.
