With its three employees, Franckgut Musterhof GmbH in Rüstorf is one of the small companies that apply for the Feronia sustainability award. Since 2014, intensive work has been going on here under the direction of the trained farmer and cook Philipp Hütthaler. Animals include Duroc pigs, Highland and Angus cattle, heifers, sheep, goats, quail, rabbits and chickens.
“Twice as much space, the animals being able to run out, the straw that is thrown in and the contact between the farmer and the animals represent a significant improvement in meat quality,” says Hütthaler when asked whether the effects can already be measured. And: “We are in the process of researching new types of animal husbandry without requiring more agricultural land.” Animal welfare and largely self-produced feed are among the most important criteria at the model farm.
