A barren patch of land, a few farms and only a few handicraft businesses: The life of the people in Dimbach in the 19th century was not particularly dazzling. The positions for teachers and doctors were often advertised in vain. Even the priests never stayed in the place where Franz Xaver Müller was born in 1870 as the son of a butcher.
But the “Fleischhacker-Franzl” was a musical talent who made it to the Linz Cathedral Kapellmeister and Regens Chori in the St. Florian monastery. The effort involved in the performance of Müller’s works reached colossal proportions: at the premiere of his main work “Augustinus” in 1924 in a festival hall at Linz’s Südbahnhof, a choir with 600 voices performed alongside 100 orchestral musicians.
How Müller worked his way up and always worried about his relatives in Strudengau was brought closer on Saturday to a scenic reading with photos that took place in the Dimbach parish church and in the neighboring Franz-Xaver-Müller-Haus. Melanie Janz and Christian Hochgatterer read from personal letters and contemporary documents, Christoph Lettner provided the guide through a life full of triumphs and strokes of fate.
The audience, including the provost of the St. Florian monastery, Johannes Holzinger, was able to understand how Müller’s music sounds thanks to a wind group from the Musikverein led by Karl Hahn and Sonja Leimhofer on the organ. (live)
