After a major fire in the Salzburg slaughterhouse on September 4 last year with damage of around ten million euros, a 27-year-old was sentenced to three and a half years of imprisonment on Thursday in the Salzburg Regional Court for arson and property damage. In addition, the man who confessed – according to the report, he has the morbid urge to set fires – is to be committed to an institution for mentally abnormal lawbreakers. The judgment is not final.

The man from Salzburg has been in custody since September 8th. According to the indictment, he is said to have torn open plastic packaging in a warehouse of the Alpenrind company’s slaughterhouse in Bergheim (Flachgau) and set fire to the cardboard box underneath. “I’m responsible for the big fire, I didn’t do anything about it,” admitted the previously blameless defendant on Thursday.
