168 parking spaces at Star Movie in Regau have recently been covered with a huge photovoltaic system. It has a peak output of 530 kilowatts, can supply 140 households with electricity and was built by the Pettenbach-based company WKA Ökostrom. It is Upper Austria’s largest parking lot solar power plant to date. Hans-Peter Obermayr, Managing Director of Star Movie, presented the system to the public yesterday in the presence of Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler and Environment Minister Stefan Kaineder (both Green).

750,000 kilowatt hours per year

Together with the existing photovoltaic system on the roof of the cinema, the film temple now produces 750,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. That is three times the self-consumption. Star Movie feeds the surplus into a Regau energy community. And more solar carports are not only planned in Regau. Obermayr will also upgrade cinema car parks in Ried and at other Star Movie locations. Five charging stations for electric cars will also be added this year in Regau.

The green politician duo was impressed yesterday. “We need many projects like this in Regau throughout Austria,” said Gewessler. “Here is shown what the energy transition looks like.” Stefan Kaineder: “There are 2,900 large car parks in Upper Austria where around 4.2 terawatt hours of electricity could be generated annually. The areas are already sealed. And it makes economic sense too. The systems will pay for themselves in 15 to 20 years and will continue to be profitable for many years afterwards.”

But Star Movie also sets accents when it comes to consumption. In the past ten years, countless technical measures have reduced energy consumption by 26 percent.
