One of the two men was only partially buried and was able to free himself from the masses of snow on his own, the second buried man was located and dug out by other tourers within a very short time. Both were taken to the hospital in Zams with unspecified injuries, the police said in the evening.
The two tourers were therefore part of an experienced group of three who climbed the western slope of the Bergwerkskopf. The ski tourers released a slab avalanche around 60 meters wide and around 180 meters long above their ascent track. The first two winter sports enthusiasts were caught by the avalanche and swept away about 160 meters. The third ski tourer was not caught by the avalanche and called the rescue services on her cell phone. A subsequent second tour group was able to observe the avalanche from the Steinkar from a distance and also rushed to help.
