The Hong Kong observatory issued a T8 storm warning, the third highest category, which forced the suspension of boat transport services and several bus routes were interrupted, although the subway continued to operate.
Schools had closed hours earlier and some public and private offices closed as well, the AFP news agency reported.
The new storm comes after a T8 alert was issued on Saturday for the arrival of Tropical Storm Lionrock, which dumped torrential rains and strong winds in the city.
Although the axis of that storm remained hundreds of km south of Hong Kong, the alert remained for 22 hours, the longest since 1978.
Many villagers were caught off guard by Lionrock’s ferocity, which began to hit the city with heavy rain on Friday.
A woman died Friday morning when a bamboo scaffold surrounding a Hong Kong residential tower collapsed in high winds and fell onto a road on a nearby hill.
