Around 200 Waldingen citizens protested today, Sunday, against the impending deportation of the Galstyan family to Armenia, including Mayor Johann Plakolm (VP) and Pastor Franz Schauer. The father is a seriously ill dialysis patient. “Deportation would mean his death,” says demo organizer Brigitte Raffeiner, referring to the poor health system in Armenia.
“Excellently integrated”
In addition, the family that has lived here for eight years is considered “excellently integrated”. Mrs. Galstyan cleans the public toilet facilities on a voluntary basis and is a “wonderful hostess”. The son attends the technical school for mechatronics in Haslach and is with the fire brigade. The daughter, herself a diabetic, is a student at BORG Linz. The family can support itself and has an apartment. All of these are actually good prerequisites for a humanitarian right to stay. “With the rally, the population wants to show in a peaceful way that they stand behind the family and support staying in the market town of Walding,” says Raffreiner.
