Suddenly he lost the ground under his feet: A 55-year-old from the Amstetten district was seriously injured on a ski tour on the stump wall in the border area between Upper and Lower Austria.

The man had left Hollenstein an der Ybbs in the direction of the stump wall. Large parts of the tour are densely forested, the summit slope itself is steep, but passable without great difficulty.

Immediately below the summit, the 55-year-old fell about eight meters into a doline. A rescue from the air was not possible at first, mountain rescues from Hollenstein, Göstling, Waidhofen and Losenstein prepared for a terrestrial evacuation. The rescue helicopter Christophorus 15 was finally able to fly eight mountain rescuers to the scene of the accident in a weather window. The 55-year-old was freed from the vertical shaft using a rope and a team train and taken to the Amstetten hospital.

“The hole was very small and incredibly difficult to see. Luckily, the accident was relatively minor. The height of the fall is considerable,” says Simon Sonnleitner, head of the Steyr/Losenstein mountain rescue service, who was on duty with eight men.
