“It’s not that rare and occurs in 30 percent of cases,” says Doris Auinger from the Schwarzen Adler pharmacy in Linz. Which is no wonder, after all, it is an operation in which the skin is injured. “And that is always a possible entry point for bacteria and viruses.”

Symptoms range from itching to a burning sensation to redness and swelling, and even bleeding is possible. “The top priority is therefore absolute hygiene, which includes cleaning and disinfecting the wound well,” says Doris Auinger.

Wound and healing ointments help

In addition, one must be aware that a piercing or tattoo needs time to heal – several weeks or even months, depending on the body region. “Here wound and healing ointments do a good job, but there are even special tattoo creams,” says Auinger.

It is also important to ensure that the tattooed skin is not stressed too much in the initial phase. “So don’t rub or even brush. I also advise against showering or bathing for too long or even staying in a thermal bath,” says Auinger. You should also avoid the sun at first, as well as fragrances. When it comes to piercings, she warns against playing around with them. “Clothes that are too tight or fluffy increase the risk of inflammation.”
