How should the Carnival holiday be paid?

According to national legislation, this means that workers who receive their salary on a monthly basis will normally do so whether or not its activity is interrupted due to the festivity. Regarding day laborers, a common figure in the agricultural sector, they will receive the wage only in the case of working on a holiday, that is, Thursday or Friday.

On the other hand, holidays such as January 1, May 1, July 18, August 25 and December 25 “all workers will receive remuneration as if they worked; in case of working, they will receive double pay”, details the Law 12,590 of 1958 that governs the non-working holidays In uruguay.

How many holidays are left?

The first two holidays of the year have already passed, January 1 – which was immovable and non-working – and January 6, Three Kings Day – working and immovable. Three working holidays are moved to the previous Monday, in case they fall between Tuesday and Friday, with the aim of creating long weekends in Uruguay and promote tourism: April 19 (Landing of the Eastern Thirty-three)on May 18 (Battle of the Stones) and on October 12 (Day of respect for cultural diversity).

However, the president Luis Lacalle Pou does not agree that the holidays run, since its raison d’être is not touristic. For this to be fulfilled, the executive must modify by law, for which reason it sent a project to Parliament (which has not yet been dealt with since September 2021). As long as it is not discussed within the framework of the legislative power, those three holidays will continue to run to obtain the long weekend.
