There were at least three dead and five injured, media and local authorities reported. As the university police announced in the short message service Twitter, they asked students and teachers to get to safety. Local media videos showed police officers storming the scene.
University police deputy chief Chris Rozman confirmed that at least five victims were taken to hospital, some with life-threatening injuries. MSU police later announced the deaths of three people on Twitter.
The suspect was last seen fleeing the MSU building on foot, Rozman said. The shooter is at large, the university city of East Lansing said on Twitter.
University police wrote on Twitter that shots were fired in two locations – near an academic building called Berkey Hall and a sports facility called IM East. The shooting began after 8:00 p.m. (local time).
The University of Michigan is attended by more than 50,000 students according to its official website. The campus therefore extends over more than 21 square kilometers.
Monday night’s violence came about 14 months after a fatal Nov. 30, 2021 shooting at Oxford High School in Oakland County, Michigan, in which a 15-year-old student opened fire with a semi-automatic pistol. Four classmates were killed in this attack and six other students and a teacher were wounded.
