The attacker began shooting inside a building of the MSU at dusk, Chris Rozman noteddeputy head of the campus police.
Some of the wounded were in danger of death, he added, the AFP news agency reported.
The gunman then walked to a nearby building where he fired more shots.
The attacker shot himself dead after fleeing the scenesaid the Police.
“It really has been a nightmare tonight. We are relieved that there is no longer an active threat on campus,” Rozman said.
Police had previously released a photo of the suspect, a short black man in red shoes, a jean jacket, and a baseball cap.
Police refused to give details of the victims, including whether they were students or teachers at the university, one of the largest in USA.
He also did not confirm if the suspect had any connection to the university, but clarified that he was not aware of any threats to the community in recent weeks.
The police quickly arrived at the scene, and asked students and officials to seek refuge at the site.
The Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmerwas informed about the shooting and said that the police were working to secure the area.
“Let’s embrace tonight with the Spartan community,” he wrote. Whitmer on Twitterin a reference to the university’s athletic logo.
Shootings at schools and universities are alarmingly frequent as part of a broader wave of gun violence in USAwhere the proliferation of firearms has grown in recent years.
