Uruguay will join the Budapest Convention against cybercrime

The Budapest Convention has 66 participating states and 15 observers and is the only international treaty dedicated to the comprehensive approach to Cybercrime. That is why the Foreign Ministry has already announced that they will contact institutions dedicated to the matter to work and coordinate the Uruguay’s adherence to the international treaty.

Among the advantages that the country will have for adhering to the agreement are “the possibility of integrate a collaborative network with countries around the world to meet the challenges of cybercrime; access programs capacity building and strengthening for national institutions and legislative assistance; provide and request assistance to States Parties in the area of ​​cybercrime investigations.

In 2022, cyberattacks grew by 6%

Cybercrime has been a problem that has been increasing worldwide and Uruguay is not out of this trend. According to him National Information Security Incident Response Center (CERTuy), is a type of crime that is generating more and more interest and that, in terms of money, exceeds drug trafficking. In the last year, there was a 6% increase in cyberattacks, reaching a number of 4,169 attacks. For its part, in the last four years the number doubled, while in the last seven their numbers increased seven times.

Among the most recurring forms of computer scams, there is phishing with 36%, mainly in the months of September and October when bank scam campaigns were carried out. In this type of action, people receive an email asking them to provide their information to access bank accounts, accompanied by a link that, when entered, causes the system to be violated, making it easier to violate.

On the other hand, there are the smaller attacks that generate great damage, such as the ransomware, where an infection enters a device from one organization and spreads to others that are connected. At that time, sensitive information is also kidnapped for which ransom is requested for large sums of money with the threat of publishing it. In turn, there were also more whatsapp scams, although there was a drop in malicious software by 2% compared to 2021.
