“It’s about the matter, not the amount,” said Gerhard Klinger, district head of the Chamber of Labour, yesterday at the AK balance sheet press conference in Steyr. His employees would try to get the outstanding 58.37 euros for an employee in the sporting goods retail trade just as much as they would for 84,600 euros for a skilled worker. In this case, a court shared AK’s legal opinion that the man had been unlawfully dismissed.

“In total, we were able to raise around five million euros for our members in 2022,” reported Klinger alongside AK President Andreas Stangl. AK members from the greater Steyr area contacted the AK 5,605 times last year: a case of a dentist from the Steyr-Land district deserves special mention. The employer wanted to persuade an ordination assistant to be dismissed while she was sick, saying she didn’t mean it badly and that the employee would save herself stress and further sick leave. It was all documented in a chat history. After the Chamber of Labor intervened, the dentist had to pay a total of 5,500 euros in compensation for ten weeks. AK was also there to help and advise those affected by the two largest insolvencies in the Steyr area: the purveyors to the court and the construction company Qualibau had to file for insolvency.

As was heard from the works council at the press conference, the issue of the lack of knowledge of German among new colleagues is becoming more and more important. According to President Stangl, the topic of inflation is currently the focus of many consultations across the country.
