This is shown by the Calerie study (“Comprehensive Assessment of Long-Term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy”), as reported by orf.at. The two-year study, conducted at Columbia University in New York, involved 220 healthy men and women. Half of the test persons consumed 25 percent fewer calories, the other half were served normal food. Blood samples were continuously analyzed to determine biological age.
Many positive effects
As the researchers report in the journal “Nature Aging”, changes were actually measurable after two years of fasting. The “age rate” has slowed down by two to three percent. This corresponds to a reduction in the risk of death by 10 to 15 percent, comparable to stopping smoking, they say. In a follow-up study with the same subjects, the scientists are now investigating whether the calorie reduction has other long-term effects on the body – for example whether the diet also helps to reduce the risk of age-related diseases.
