Together with Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens), he announced on Wednesday a “dialogue process” that “enables people in Austria to process everything they experienced during the Corona period”.
The Chancellor spoke of “deep rifts in our society” that Corona left behind and put a heavy burden on people in Austria: “Let’s call it a name: Corona was a kind of trauma for our society that we should now work through together. This pandemic was the first pandemic in recent history, none of us had experienced this before, not even our grandparents. It was something completely new that hit us with full force and presented us as a society with unprecedented challenges. A critical, unsparing analysis is therefore a duty and at the same time a prerequisite for healing these societal wounds and overcoming the trauma”. The government now wants to “reach out,” including to those who no longer “felt in the middle of society” due to the pandemic.
Rauch also agreed: “We have to talk seriously about how we can shape our country together, how we can rebuild trust. Honest, open communication is the basis for this trust.”
How the announced dialogue process should be structured in concrete terms is now to be discussed “together with the parliamentary parties”. It could go in the direction of a commission similar to that investigating the events surrounding the terrorist attack in Vienna in November 2020.
