Faced with this, the ministry called a press conference at 12:30 p.m. in the building Montevideo Headquarters to give more information about it.
Already in December 2022, the MGAP had called to intensify efforts to prevent influenza or avian flu from entering the country, as it is a disease that generates great economic losses in the poultry industry.
What is bird flu?
Influenza or bird flu is a infectious disease that mainly affects birds —hence its name—, and that enters a territory mainly through migratory wild birds.
Although it has several strains, the most serious ones can cause serious damage to birds, as well as their death, which seriously affects the industry. In this sense, among the symptoms that the disease presents are: rapid death of the birds, ruffled plumage, edema on the head (swollen head), diarrhea, sudden decrease in posture, production of deformed eggs with soft or thin shells, problems respiratory problems, gasping, coughing, conjunctivitis, ocular and nasal secretions, sinusitis, suffocation, incoordination, tremors, eye and head movements, paralysis and convulsions, according to data from the MGAP.
In humans, the contagion is not carried out through the consumption of meat, bones or eggs, but through the handling of infected animalsas well as contact with environments and surfaces contaminated by feces.
Plucking, handling infected poultry carcasses and preparing poultry for consumption, especially in domestic settings, are usually the main risk factors, for which reason the MGAP warned of the need for extreme care in the handling of birds that are or may be sick.
