four years in prison and a fine for the former custodian of Lacalle Pou

For this -and, although the agreement must be ratified before being considered valid-, Astesiano pleaded guilty -acknowledging a crime that, the first time, he denied before Fossati- for the issuance of Uruguayan passports to Russian citizens based on documentation false.

What penalty could Astesiano receive?

The former custodian of Lacalle Pou was sentenced for the continued crimes of conjunction of personal and public interest, criminal association, disclosure of secrets and influence peddling, for the cause of passport adulteration.

For these crimes, the Penal Code establishes, in the first case, a sentence of between 18 months and eight years; in the second, a minimum of three months and a maximum of four years; and in the latter case, a minimum of six months and a maximum of six years. But, based on the agreement with the Prosecutor’s Office, Astesiano’s defense managed to reduce the sentence and he will face four and a half years in a common prison. He will also have to pay an economic fine equivalent to about 150,000 pesos, and will not be able to hold public office for another four years.

The rest of the causes for which he is being investigated will continue to be open, but the passport case was closed and that is why he declared this Wednesday.

Astesiano’s previous statement

On February 9, the former head of presidential security testified for the second time before Fossati, who questioned him for all the causes in which he is implicated: from false passports to chats where he exchanged favors.

Although these events could be added to the supposed espionage of the Frente Amplio senators Mario Bergara and Charles Carreraas well as the most recent discoveries: the apparent use of the cameras of the Ministry of Interior to track the owner of the PIT-CNT, Marcelo Abdala; and carrying out follow-up tasks for teachers and students of the Lyceum 41 of Montevideo; the certain thing is that for Fossati, in the majority of these cases there was no criminal action.

Meanwhile, in the previous statement of the former custodian, on December 12, Astesiano had not acknowledged any of the facts for which he is being investigated in the five hours of appearance.
