For years, the Linz technical center, the HTL Paul-Hahn-Strasse, has regularly featured high in the rankings of the OÖ Nachrichten stock market game. Last year, all three podium places in the class rankings went to Linz. In the student ranking, the third place looked out. “Our class came third last year and won a screening in the Star Movie Wels,” reports Leon Mayrwöger from 4AFET.
The students could choose the film and had the whole cinema hall to themselves.
The world of stock markets plays an important role in the subject “Business and Law”. By participating in the stock market game, the two teachers, Judith Schreibmüller and Anja Weiermann, can convey practical content to their students and include current events. A good example is the Google stock crash in early February, which was discussed in class. The reason lies in the communication: The group called a short-term press meeting in Paris and announced information about the chatbot Bard as a competitor to Microsoft’s ChatGPT. Because the expectations aroused by investors were not met, prices fell sharply.
“What influence do interest rate increases have on share prices, to what extent can quarterly reports from companies have an impact? We try to incorporate these aspects into the lessons and thus give the students a sound knowledge of the world of financial markets,” says Weiermann. The interest is great. “In addition to the general interest in investment opportunities, the great prizes motivate the schoolchildren every year to playfully explore the world of financial markets,” says Schreibmüller. You can still get in now. “The share prices fluctuate a lot, we can see that in our own depot, everything is still possible in the next few weeks,” says Mayrwöger.
