The migrants are young Afghan men, the interior ministry said. The truck had Bulgarian license plates from Targowiste in northeastern Bulgaria. According to initial findings, the men suffocated.
According to police, the truck was transporting more than 50 migrants who were hiding under piles of wood. 14 survivors have been taken to hospitals in the capital Sofia, state radio BNR reports. Some of them had breathing problems.
The migrants, who are now being treated, told police that both drivers of the truck escaped. They are said to have left the truck when they discovered the bodies. It is still unclear why the truck is able to stop near the village of Lukorsko. The Ministry of the Interior ruled out a traffic accident.
