The drought has already compromised 60% of the country’s soybean crops

According to analyst projections, the water deficit already compromised 60% of the soybean cropswhich are in poor condition, and this figure may increase if the weather forecasts for the next few days in which no rainfall is forecast are met.

The most affected areas are Soriano, Cologne and Flowers, which gather 70% of the agricultural sector of Uruguay. Of the remaining 30%, River Black and paysandu they concentrate 20% of the area that is in an acceptable state, while the remaining 10% presents a heterogeneous situation, with areas where rains were recorded that gave relief and others that did not.

“It is a very complex situation because we have not had a general water throughout the summer, they have been isolated waters with showers,” he explained to scope.com the agronomist Ishmael Turban.

The expert estimated that “there is 60% of the area that already has its luck played: it will be very bad and in some it will not even yield a soybean harvest. And another 40% that can have a good state, and a very small area that can have a very good state.

However, he clarified that there is still time to reverse part of the current scenario because the harvest only takes place between April and May.

The soybean sector had already started the year with an unfavorable scenario compared to the exceptional 2022. Even before the extreme drought, official projections reported a 39% drop in exportswhich would mean a loss close to 748 million dollars, according to data from Uruguay XXI.

Last year, grain placements meant a historical record for Uruguay with 1,922 million dollars. The projected income for the current year, before the agricultural emergency was 1,174 million dollars.
