Petrobras preferred shares rose 1.9% after the president’s comments, Reuters reported.
“It is very easy. Increase in fuel, Bolsonaro’s fault. I already want to privatize Petrobras. I am willing, I will see with the economic team what we can do,” Bolsonaro said when asked about the increases in gas and fuel prices.
The ultra-conservative president, who came to power in Brazil boosted by the market due to a neoliberal economic reform program, added that he “is not a controller, I cannot better guide the price of fuel, but when it rises, it is my fault.”
“Can I interfere with Petrobras? I can, but I must not. If I interfere, I will be liable for a crime of liability (which would allow to initiate an impeachment against him). Can I lower the gasoline to three reais at the pump? I can even do that, but it is a crime of responsibility, ”he said.
Weeks ago, Itaú bank, the largest in Latin America, announced that it will support the presidential candidacy of João Doria, the governor of San Pablo, of the PSDB. The alliance between the market and Bolsonaro, sealed by the reformist plan of the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, has been weakened after several delays in carrying out key projects, including privatizations of the energy sector.
