During the two-day visit of Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz to India, the differences between the two countries with regard to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine became clear. Irrespective of this, Scholz agreed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expand economic and strategic relations. There is also a billion-dollar deal to build six submarines for the Indian Navy.

India has just as close ties to Russia as it has to the West – and is therefore remaining neutral on the war. Both India and China abstained from all UN resolutions condemning the invasion, including the one marking the first anniversary of the war.

Instead of condemning the Russian invasion, the Indian prime minister advocated diplomacy. India has been calling for a solution through dialogue for a year. “India stands ready to participate in any peace process,” Modi said, according to the official translation.

Scholz wants to expand relations with the fifth strongest economic power in the world – also to loosen India from its close ties to Russia. Since the Russian attack on Ukraine, the country has expanded its imports of relatively cheap Russian oil around the world.
