During a search lasting several days in a residential building in the Carinthian municipality of Ruden (Völkermarkt district), the police seized a total of 31 long guns and 17 handguns, as well as several silencers and a firearm disguised as a walking stick. In addition, two practice hand grenades, various acids, black powder and 1.5 kilograms of explosives were secured, said a police spokesman.
House was full of filth
In the first interviews with the three arrested people – a 29-year-old Austrian and two Britons, 67 and 69 years old – no clear motives could be determined. For the time being, however, there is nothing to indicate an ideological background, the spokesman said. Further questioning of the suspects and investigations in their environment are to follow. The British had been living in the house, which was full of rubbish when it was searched, for years, and the Austrian had only recently moved into the house with them.
“For us, paragraph 175 of the Criminal Code is punishable: preparing a crime with explosives,” said Markus Kitz from the Klagenfurt public prosecutor’s office. If convicted, it carries a sentence of six months to five years in prison.
