The ÖAMTC and its partner clubs have been conducting tire tests for 50 years. On the occasion of the round anniversary, 50 tires in size 205/55 R16, which are mainly found in the lower middle class, were tested. At the same time, the evaluation criteria have been reorganized with immediate effect. “A new two-pillar evaluation takes the environmental aspect into account to a greater extent – this now accounts for 30 percent of the overall rating. For the first time, sustainability criteria are also being included in the standard rating of the tire test. However, the most important thing is and remains driving safety, which accounts for 70 percent of the rating.” , says ÖAMTC tire expert Steffan Kerbl. The result: ten tires are rated “good”, 21 “satisfactory”, twelve with “sufficient” and seven with “insufficient”.
The “environmental balance sheet” evaluates criteria such as abrasion and the weight of a tire as well as sustainability. The latter mainly deals with the production sites and the associated certificates, but also with the tire itself. “It is considered here whether the tire is new or retreaded and whether there are production residues on the tire that go unchecked over the first few kilometers and unnecessarily get into the environment,” explains Kerbl.
In addition, a pollutant analysis of all 50 test products with regard to nitrosamines and PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) was carried out as part of the test. Result: No pollutants were found in any of the tires. In the environmental rating, the “Michelin e.Primacy” was the only one to achieve “very good” – with an expected range of 71,500 kilometers. Unfortunately, this only results in “sufficient” values for driving safety (wet).
