According to the president of OSE, Raul Montero, The updated report of the state company to date, determined that 700 notifications were made that could lead to a service cut due to the non-priority use of water. However, Montero assured that the service cuts that were ordered were mainly due to “frauds”, according to an interview he gave in the Underlined medium.

“We have gone to a place where they were doing a task that was allegedly at odds with the restrictions (requested by OSE) but in truth they were using water that they were not paying for. A laundry room for example, “explained the president of the company regarding the cuts that he called”frauds”. “I am cutting off a person who is stealing my water and who can regularize it, as opposed to the neighbor next door who is paying me for the water,” added Montero.
On the other hand, Montero said that there are situations where the rate paid by a household does not agree with its use. For example, there were households that paid residential rates when the water was used for commercial purposes. In these cases, the president of OSE specified that they went to his social services because “it was about very low income families or a very complicated situation and we are looking for a way around it to see how we can solve it without cutting off the water”.
A request for responsible use in a summer that does not give up
The official recalled that the areas where the non-essential use of water was prohibited due to the drought such as Minas, Nueva Helvecia, Rosario, San José, the Gold Coast from Salinas to Parque del Plata, Maldonado, Montevideo and the metropolitan area, although he specified that all places in Uruguay were asked to rationally use water.
Montero said that it is one of the worst summers in recent decades due to the lack of rain that affects the proper functioning of the dams and reservoirs that ensure the water supply for the population. “We are resisting the worst summer in the last 40 years and we haven’t run out of water anywhere. I would tell you that it is with some pride that I say that”, remarked the OSE president.
