President Luis Lacalle Pou transmitted, through his account Twittera message within the framework of a new International Women’s Daya day that will have mobilizations and the first all-female strike in the country’s history.
“Equal rights for women is enshrined in our Constitution“, recalled Lacalle Pou for whom, however, “putting it in writing is not enough, with which the government also seeks to advance equal opportunities.”

During his speech before the legislative Assembly the president did not have any section dedicated specifically to women or equal opportunities. The word women was mentioned four timesthree of them referring to measures taken by the government: the transfer of prisoners to the new Punta de Rieles prison to reduce overcrowding in other centers, the creation of the Parenting Bonus and free access to breast implants for mastectomy women.
The fourth mention did refer to work from a government area for gender equality. Lacalle Pou recalled that since the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) work is being done “to incorporate the gender perspective into agricultural policies and value chains.”
In this context, he listed that the ministry provided productive support to women linked to the farming sector, gender transformative practices were designed in access to agricultural work, and the gender perspective was strengthened at the institutional level.
