Mexico makes prevention more flexible despite the warning of a possible fourth wave of Covid-19

Until Saturday, 48% of the 1,179 municipalities reported “zero active cases” in the last two weeks and almost 30%, between one and a dozen, according to figures from the Geographical Platform of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) .

According to the Ministry of Health, only 23% of beds with ventilators and 26% of general beds were occupied, while 11 weeks of decline in both infections and deaths have been completed after the third wave of the pandemic that hit the country.

The maximum peak of this wave of coronavirus infections was reached on August 8, when 25,300 were registered in Mexico, a record for the entire pandemic.

Faced with this de-escalation, the Ministry of Health announced that the number of states in “green” would go from nine to 20 from this Monday, the number of states in “yellow, that is, moderate risk, went from 22 to 11, and only Baja California stayed in “orange”, that is to say, high risk.

To date, Mexico does not register any status in “red” color, low maximum risk.

Likewise, the health authorities of the capital announced that only five of its 33 hospitals will be used to treat coronavirus patients, although they warned that they have the capacity to reconvert more within a period of three days, if necessary.

In addition, some businesses, such as bars and party halls, will be able to extend their hours until 1 in the morning and with 50% capacity, while massive open-air concerts will now be able to function 100% in the capital, Eduardo announced Clark, director of the city’s Digital Government, quoted by the ANSA news agency.

However, the euphoria over the return to a questioned “new normal” was tempered last Friday by the Minister of Health, Jorge Alcocer, who warned that “the contingency has not ended”, during an appearance before the full Senate.

“We hoped that the third wave would be the last, but it will not be like that, unfortunately,” the official emphasized, and called on citizens to “remain cautious” and continue to adhere to restrictive measures such as the use of chinstraps and maintain social distance.

The government, however, is confident that advancing the vaccination process could better prepare the country for a fourth wave, by achieving the immunization of three out of every four adults in the country.

Starting Monday, hospitals and clinics will begin applying the coronavirus vaccine to 1.5 million children and adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17, with underlying diseases such as obesity, diabetes or cancer.

The government faces strong criticism from the opposition and experts for its refusal to apply the dose to the entire demographic segment, made up of 10 million people, and a federal judge issued a ruling a few days ago for the authorities to apply the dose to the whole of this sector.

However, the Minister of Health told the senators that the decision not to apply the vial to minors “is not foolish”, but rather responds to the recommendations of an advisory group linked to the World Health Organization (WHO ).
