“It’s time something was done.” Upper Austria’s military commander, Dieter Muhr, made it very clear today at the ground-breaking ceremony in Rieder’s Zehner barracks. From April 2023 to December 2024, the army will renovate the outdated service building. According to current cost estimates, almost 10.5 million will be invested in the project. “It needs a modern and up-to-date infrastructure,” says Muhr.

The first building of the Zehner Kaserne is to be brought up to the latest state of the art in the coming months. The renovation affects the kitchen, technical facilities and storage rooms. In addition, the rooms for the command of the armored infantry battalion will also be renovated and modernized. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (VP), who was also a guest in Ried on the occasion of the celebrations, calls the renovation work a “first important step” in the redesign of the barracks. The other buildings are to follow in the next few years. Investment is necessary for a modern army, says Tanner. “We’re not doing this for its own sake, but for the safety of all of us.”

Simple but modern

“Peace, freedom and democracy cannot exist without security, and this is guaranteed by the army,” stated State Councilor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (VP), who came to Ried on behalf of State Governor Thomas Stelzer. “The renovation of the Rieder barracks is the starting signal for a series of important investments for the military base in Upper Austria,” said Hattmannsdorfer in his speech.

In addition to the renovation of the interior, the entire shell of the farm building will also be thermally renovated, and the facade will be simple but modern. During the conversion phase, the soldiers will have their meals in a dining tent. The chefs will prepare the meals in the purpose-built container kitchen.
