As reported by state media on Saturday, the boats were off the north-eastern coast of Morocco near the town of Nador on the border with the Spanish enclave of Melilla on Friday. They had loaded “85 bales of cannabis resin with a total weight of more than three tons,” wrote the state news agency MAP, citing a source in the Moroccan military.
According to the United Nations, Morocco is the largest cannabis producer in the world. Moroccan police seized nearly 100 tons of the drug last year. In 2021, Morocco legalized cannabis for “medical, cosmetic and industrial use” in a bid to control the substance without depriving the country’s many producing families of their income.
