The proportion of seniors in the population is increasing due to demographics, in the Braunau district the number of generation 60+ will increase from the current 28,000 to more than 41,000 in 2050, according to the senior citizens’ association, which recruited 293 seniors in the Braunau district last year. The local groups in Neukirchen and Aspach were the most successful. The Seniors’ Association has more than 6,500 members across the district.

It is important to change the view of seniors, according to Braunau’s senior citizens’ association district chairman Johann Schweiberer. “Being senior doesn’t mean being in need of protection and help, but being able to take part in life independently and actively. Whether as a promoter of the economy or as a solid pillar of voluntary work – the over 60-year-olds make an important contribution in many areas.”

In the Schärding district, the number of people over 60 is likely to increase from the current 16,000 to more than 21,000 in 2050, according to the senior citizens’ association, which registered 301 new members in the Schärding district last year. The local groups of St. Marienkirchen and Taufkirchen were particularly successful in advertising. The organization has 4,400 members across the district. There is a lot on offer, according to district chairman Otto Straßl. “With our activities, events and organized trips, we offer an attractive program – for both the 62-year-old and the 89-year-old.”

This year, the senior citizens’ association wants to focus on the topic of crime and its prevention, including the aspects of fraud and cybercrime.
