The sports infrastructure of Weibern is getting on in years: The non-heatable cabin building next to the soccer field dates from the 80s, the tennis courts even from the 70s. In addition, the different sections of the Union Weibern are scattered all over the municipality and sometimes have to train on private property.
This will soon be over: a new sports center will be built around the soccer field, which will offer state-of-the-art facilities for soccer, tennis, curling, cycling, volleyball and photography. The preparatory work is already underway, construction site operations should really start next week, announces Weibern’s Mayor Manfred Roitinger (VP): “It’s going to be great. The timing is good because the existing plants are all at the end of their useful lives at the same time. Now we can bundle our sports in one place,” he says.
Newer, better, nicer
The women have big plans. The centerpiece of the center is to be a new two-story club building with a clubhouse that can be used by all sections. The changing rooms and showers will be located in the basement. The existing soccer field will be renovated, the smaller training field will be expanded so that it can be used for tournaments. Both will be equipped with floodlights.
The curling section will have its own hall, and three “red courts” with mats for tennis players and a volleyball court will be built outside. The end is a “Fun Court” that can be adapted for various sports such as basketball.
Total costs: 3.6 million euros
Total costs of around 3.6 million euros are planned – these include the land purchases of 400,000 euros that have already taken place. The state and municipality bear a large part of the costs, the Union Weibern contributes 15 percent – and muscle power in the form of personal contributions on the construction site. “We created a WhatsApp group for people to post. We already have 150 members,” says chairman Lukas Mai.
The sports center is scheduled to go into operation as early as next year, and the women’s enthusiasm for the project is certain: “We’ve done a lot of preparatory work, now we’re looking forward to finally getting started,” says club chairman Mai.
