In the German subject, the text machine was rated as satisfactory or sufficient by teachers, depending on the topic, in math it managed a close four and in parts of the English Matura a solid three, the student representatives announced on Wednesday.
Realistic approach
The test was carried out relatively realistically: When entering in ChatGPT, only the information was inserted. The direct answers spit out by the software were then evaluated – without even correcting the most obvious errors. The texts in German were then evaluated by a team of teachers, the answers in math and English by the student council itself (the solutions are published every year after the Matura, note).
Incidentally, the German teachers rated the topic package best (there are three to choose from) that also includes a literature assignment. Here ChatGPT got a satisfactory and comments like “linguistic good except for a few expression and repetition errors!” or “well worked out orthographically, also in terms of style, apart from a few unfavorable repetitions of words”. The other two packages were judged less well (eg “Almost wrong text form, more of a discussion, no linguistic means, clear deductions in the excerpt, no stylistic devices, just boring”).
Barely getting through in math
The maths central matura for the AHS was just barely made (18.5 out of 36 points). In English, where only part of the Matura was queried (there are also listening tasks, NB), the software came through well on these points.
“If a student arrives for the Matura unprepared and has, utopian thought, managed to have Chat-GPT with him as a companion, it is possible for this student to take the written matriculation exam in the subjects German and mathematics by simply entering the to pass the test positively,” said state school spokesman Marco Gayer in a broadcast. Among other things, the student representatives are calling for young people to be given the opportunity to choose for themselves whether they complete schoolwork or the Matura on paper or with laptops (without the use of AI).
