March 16 (Reuters) – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said in a speech delivered on Thursday at the inauguration ceremony of the new Brazilian director general of Itaipu Nacional, that the new agreement with Paraguay for the hydroelectric plant will take into account the responsibility of Brazil, as the largest country in South America, to help the growth of its neighbors.
At the inauguration ceremony of the director general, Enio Verri, Lula also stated that he hopes that it will soon be possible to produce green hydrogen from the water of the dam’s reservoir.
Lula also said that he will strengthen Mercosur to increase the bargaining power of the regional bloc. (Reporting by Fernando Cardoso in São Paulo, Edited in Spanish by Manuel Farías)
