This means that the growth rate is almost back to what it was before the pandemic year, said Drei boss Rudolf Schrefl at a press conference on Thursday. “As a threesome, we worked very solidly in a very challenging environment last year,” says Schrefl. The only thing that weighed on the result from the fees were the “increases in costs that all companies and households in Austria are feeling,” said Schrefl. Costs such as energy costs, personnel costs and rents have become particularly important here.

The number of users remained stable at 4.1 million in 2022. The mobile communications provider was able to grow in the area of business customers and discount offers, and the roaming revenues have also risen again “thankfully due to the increased mobility”, the company boss summed up.

“There is no other mobile phone provider that shovels as much data through its networks as we do,” said Schrefl. “And of course that’s only possible because we invest record sums in network expansion every year.” Last year, 1.44 billion gigabytes (GB) of mobile data volume was transported in the Drei network. That was 42 GB (2021: 36.2 GB) per SIM card and month.

In the next few years, Drei will invest 1.2 billion euros in the expansion of the 5G network. “We see it very clearly as our mission, our mandate, but also as a matter of course that we bring 5G to the area,” said Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Matthias Baldermann. By the end of 2025, the plan is to connect 738 “underserved” communities to the 5G broadband network.
