“While Asia has a strong position on patents, China only accounts for 5% of patents in plastics recycling globally,” explained Ménière.
For its part, the recycling of plastics has different methods such as mechanical, chemical or biological.
Fundamental research “has a much more important weight” in the biological method “than in the other recycling methods,” said the EPO. This represents “20% of the innovations of universities and public organizations”, most of them European or American.
Spain stands out “for its high degree of specialization both in the recycling of plastics and in innovation in bioplastics” and is situated above the European average. However, within Europe, the study indicates that France, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium are the countries that stand out for their specialization in both plastic recycling and bioplastics technologies.
Europe also leads fundamental research in universities, American companies generated “four times more” patents than European ones, as recognized by the EPO.
