Bolsonaro and Duque agree to a common front for the Amazon for COP26

Both presidents avoided talking publicly about Venezuela, whose leader, Nicolás Maduro, they tried to destabilize together with the United States in 2019 through border actions, such as the episode of shipping trucks with food, which could not reach their destination or pass through customs.

Bolsonaro during his brief speech highlighted his concern “with border security” and cited the demobilized guerrilla group of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

“We are concerned about the FARC and not just in Colombia,” said Bolsonaro, who revealed Duque’s interest in renewing the Colombian Air Force fleet with Supetucanos military aircraft, manufactured by the Brazilian construction company Embraer.

The Bolsonaro government is in the international spotlight due to its environmental policies towards the Amazon rainforest, of which Brazil owns 60% of the territory.

Bolsonaro sent a bill to Congress to be able to exploit large-scale mining and agriculture in existing indigenous reserves and in his three years in office, record fires were registered in the northern region of his country, which earned him requests from the international community to increase the control of environmental crimes.

In turn, Duque focused his visit on the search for investments in infrastructure and energy by Brazilian companies in Colombia. “Commitments have been made to invest 1.4 billion dollars,” he celebrated.

The Colombian said that bilateral relations between the two “are at the highest point” on the environmental issue, he had more emphasis than Bolsonaro on increasing control in the Amazon rainforest.

“We take care of the Amazon within our sovereignty,” he said, highlighting that in 2021 Brazil has made “notable efforts against environmental crimes.”

“We share that the Amazonian countries come to Glasgow to recognize that this territory by conserving it can save 2,000 million tons of gases a year. Work for energy reduction and work with the neutrality of carbon emissions and protection of forests”, he claimed.

COP26 begins on October 31 in Scotland to discuss measures by countries and companies to try to stop the process of climate change, including the development of the Amazon region.

Brazil has promised zero deforestation as one of its goals by 2030.
