Mayor Ferdinand Aigner (52) has announced his resignation for health reasons. He will resign from office on June 1, until then the ÖVP St. Georgen should choose his successor.
Aigner has been in municipal politics since 2003 and has been mayor of the Attergau municipality for eight years. “Especially in times like these, the mayor’s office requires 100 percent operational capability and thus also resilience,” explains the VP politician. Unfortunately, since his illness in 2016, he has not been able to do all of this. During this time, Aigner had to undergo seven operations – despite the successful recovery, there were always setbacks. “I only have one life,” he says in the OÖN interview. In the last few days in particular, it has become clear to him that he will have to focus even more on his health in the future. The decision to resign is deeply personal and is not influenced by current political conditions.
“Ferdl is a real mayor who is committed to the concerns of his citizens,” said VP district chairman Christian Mader, acknowledging the work of the Attergau local politician. Aigner is seen as straightforward and direct and has repeatedly quarreled with the Home Secretary when it came to overcrowding at the Thalham Reception Centre. He constantly pointed out the unfair distribution of refugees and that his community had to bear an enormous burden.
