In conversation with the weekly Búsqueda, the Director of Tourism of the Department of Canelones, Horace Yanez, advanced the possibility of carrying out the construction of a marina. A project that has been discussed since 2011 and that the government of Lacalle Pou proposed at the beginning of his administration.

According to Yanez, the best option would be to build it on the “zero block”, which is a price of 11,000 square meters that it is close to a rocky area, which would make it easier to obtain authorization from the environment, although he stressed that for certain reasons it never materialized. However, there are other places such as the Parque del Plata or the Solís Chico stream.
The investment of the port would imply between 50 and 70 million dollars, depending on its characteristics. That is why Yanez, who is in charge of the project, announced that they will present it at a nautical tourism fair in search of investors and then traveled to Madrid with the same goal.
Yanez established that the support of both the government and the private sector is crucial, which will allow showing unity between the sectors with the aim of attracting investments that trust in Uruguay. However, the first option is for the State to take charge of the investment, although they do not believe it is possible and for this reason they are betting on a partnership with the private sector.
In the first year of Lacalle Pou’s administration, investment in the marina was proposed together with the construction of a hotel and a casino that would allow private companies to recover their investment. According to Yanez, if the mayor of Canelones, Yamandu Orsi, – who announced his candidacy yesterday – becomes president would have the issue on his agenda, although it does not mean that he will have the money.
