The leaders joined in a show of the strength of their alliance in the midst of severe tensions between the two countries and the West over the war in Ukraine.
Putin expressed after the summit a prudent support for Chinese proposals to find a negotiated solution to the conflict in Ukraine. In this sense, the Kremlin criticized the Western powers and kyiv for the lack of responses to those proposalswhich include the call to respect the territorial sovereignty of all countries.
“Many points of the peace plan proposed by China can serve as the basis for a peaceful solution, when the West and kyiv are ready for it. But We do not see for the moment willingness on your part“said the Russian president.
For his part, the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelensky, responded to Putin’s accusations and invited China to dialogue and awaits “an answer”. From the United States they considered today that they do not believe that “China can be considered as reasonably impartial.”
After the meeting between Putin and Xi, a statement released from Russia stressed that both countries “are very concerned about the increasing strengthening of ties between NATO and the countries of the Asia-Pacific region in relation to military and security issues” and accuse the Atlantic Alliance of “undermine regional peace and stability“.
It also denounces “the negative influence of US strategy guided by a Cold War mentality about peace and stability in that region”.
Russia-Ukraine conflict: Zelensky will join the G7 Summit
Amid diplomatic tensions, the Ukrainian leader, Volodimir Zelensky announced that he will participate via videoconference in the G7 summit of Western powers in May which will take place in the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
