They let go of the hand of the Corte Gómez prosecutor and the ruling party wants his resignation

The government coalition considers that the time of the head of the Public Ministry is over, while the magistrate downplays the lost political support.

The tension in the prosecution continues, and the government coalition —for whom the decision to transfer the prosecutor Gabriela Fossati and relegating her from the Astesiano case was a mistake—seeks that the court prosecutor Juan Gómez of an anticipated step aside from his position in the triumvirate of the Public Ministry of Uruguay.

The new drama uncovered around the cause whose main protagonist is the former head of the president’s security seems to be far from over Luis Lacalle Pou; and whose scenario is, this time, the Prosecutor’s Office itself. And in a context where tensions and conflicts —both between the magistrates and between the Multicolor Coalition and Gómez himself- have been together for more than a year, the search for a successor for the head of the Public Ministry resumed strength.

From Presidency, meanwhile, they refrain from commenting in order to preserve the institutions —and keep the least possible impact on the Power of attorney—, but they look from above, with concern, at the media chaos unleashed in recent days. Meanwhile, the legislators of the ruling party did not maintain the same decorum, and many quickly went out to stir the hornet’s nest with one result in mind: that Gómez resign from his position or, failing that, the appointment of new authorities of the control agencies.

However, this is not close to happening: the coalition will resume negotiations to obtain the maximum possible consensus and obtain the special majorities necessary to appoint a new court prosecutor; although disagreements exist even within the ruling party —mainly regarding who would be the successor.

For various members of the coalition, the Gómez administration has become a political dispute and their decisions lack the equanimity and balance corresponding to judicial processes; at least since 2022. The straw that broke the camel’s back was what the ruling party understands as a movement of pieces that will benefit the broad front within the investigation for the Astesiano case. However, they insist that the magistrate does not accept his mistake or the fact that his time in office is over.

No problems and no intention of giving up

The prosecutor of Corte Gómez, for his part, rules out the possibility of resigning. At least for now, since he is more cautious when answering about his continuity, something that will be determined by what happens in the future.

Contrary to what Fossati maintained in various media about the magistrate transferring her for having previous problems with the Presidency, the head of the Public Ministry denied such disagreements and maintained that the having political support or not was never important for him.

Likewise, he again pointed out that he offered all available resources so that the prosecutor —new head of the Flagrancy Prosecutor’s Office 16th shift and with a new medical certification, this time for 30 days— he could investigate the former presidential custodian in the best possible way. In this sense, Gómez offered the team of prosecutors that Fossati rejected to the new magistrate in charge of the case, Sabrina Flores, Who would be willing to accept it?
