More than 30 non-governmental organizations and the union center PIT-CNT they mobilize in Montevideo this Wednesday, within the framework of the Water Dayto protest against the Arazati projectpromoted by the government, and denounce the lack of policies in the sector, in the midst of a historic drought that threatened the country’s drinking water reserves.
The mobilization received the support of the opposition Broad Front (FA), which in a statement highlighted the increasing consequences in the country due to climate change and what it considered official abandonment.
The pronouncement points to the effects of the persistent drought on production, and also on people, with cities “on the verge of suffering severe restrictions on access to drinking water.”
The FA blames official policies, including budget cuts that, it says, delayed works on reservoirs and other sources of the vital liquid, and that led to the Administration of State Sanitary Works (OSE) at their lowest investment levels.
On his side, the Executive defends the Arazatí project, which plans to build infrastructure to make water drinkable and an investment of 200 million that could be more with a sanitation plan for 60 localities, Prensa Latina recalled.
What will the mobilization be like in Montevideo?
The activity will begin with a concentration on Liberty Square from 5:00 p.m., where an informative flyer will be held, until 7:00 p.m., when the March for Water Day is scheduled to formally begin, along Avenida 18 de Julio towards the esplanade of the University of the Republicreported Uy Press.
There, the organizers estimate that they will arrive at approximately 7:30 p.m. and then there will be an artistic show with invited bands. The day will end with the reading a proclamation.
In addition, in different parts of Montevideo there will be activists informing about what the Arazatí project consists of, “the real causes of the lack of water that we are experiencing that go beyond the lack of rain, and also sharing what are the measures that should be taken to reach a solution”, indicated the conveners.
