It hasn’t been quiet “Unterm Stoa” for a long time. Because winter is on its farewell tour and hikers have long been using the spring-like temperatures for a round on the eastern shore of Lake Traunsee. And, because in recent years there has been a debate about the parking situation in Gmunden’s Traunsteinstrasse.
As reported, the municipal council introduced a controversial fee for the turning point at the foot of the Traunstein in December 2021. If you pay 25 euros, you can park your vehicle there for 24 hours, 48 hours cost 50 euros. It will stay that way in the new season, which officially begins “Unterm Stoa” on April 1st.
“But we wanted to find an additional incentive to switch to public transport,” says Reinhold Kassmannhuber, Chairman of the Gmunden Transport Committee. Therefore, the municipal council decided on Tuesday new regulations.
- The climate ticket is now also valid for the shuttle bus that takes hikers from Gmunden Seebahnhof to the turning point. This allows those who want to travel to Gmunden by public transport to get to the foot of the Traunstein free of charge. For example, if you come from the central area, you can use the train, tram and shuttle bus free of charge.
- The shuttle bus will again be running this year from April 1st from the Seebahnhof in Gmunden to the reversal point. Two or three buses, depending on the weather, are used on weekends and public holidays. A single journey costs five euros and a return journey costs ten euros. What is new is that a voucher worth five euros is included with every round-trip ticket. The vouchers can be redeemed in all businesses in the city of Gmunden or in the huts around and on the Traunstein. One way costs only 2.50 euros per person. The shuttle bus is free for young people up to the age of 15.
- The fee-free short-term parking zone is valid again this year on weekends and public holidays in the entire Traunsteinstraße for 180 minutes. During the week it is lifted, then the principle applies: first come, first parked. In the area of the entrance to the Hernlersteig, four parking spaces that had been deleted have been restored.
- The parking tariffs were adjusted again. Previously, hikers had to pay ten euros for three hours of parking at the turning point. Now they can park there for the same price for five hours. The prices for 24 hours and 48 hours remain the same. A day ticket for the parking space at the Seebahnhof costs eight euros this year. The hourly rate there is 1.50 euros.
- The Traunstein Taxi This year again brings hikers every half hour from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. from the monastery square to the turning point. Cost: five euros. The taxi must be ordered at least 30 minutes in advance by calling 0043/50422 1691.
- The cottage season has already started weekend operations (Friday-Sunday) for the Mairalm. The Traunsteinhaus will probably follow at Easter, the Gmundnerhütte will open on April 29th.
