The country has risen 40 places in the last two years thanks to the implementation and improvements in the speed of the fiber optic network, while the auction for 5G is being prepared.
The National Telecommunications Administration (Antel) was recognized for its technological improvements that allowed to increase the speed of fixed Internet, and Uruguay climbed 19 places in the global broadband speed rankingthus ranking in 16th place. In the last two years, the country has risen 40 places.
The news, communicated by the president of Antel, Gabriel Gurmendezis a boost for technological development in the territory, but also a sign of the efforts made in this regard by the government and the state telephone company.
Thus, Uruguay was ranked 16th in the Speedtest Global Indexabove countries like South Korea, Japan, Germany and Israel; and was also ranked as the second best Latin American in the rankingjust behind Chili —which came in fourth, dropping two positions.
With an internet speed of 149.56 Megabits per second (Mbps), the country was among the top 20 out of 180 countries in the world surveyed. Likewise, it was one of the few countries in the region that improved its position: bolivian moved up one position (123), Brazil (30) stayed the same, and Argentina (75), Paraguayan (60) and Peru (59) fell one, three and four places, respectively.
Antel improvements
As of February, Antel improved the download and upload speed for business and private customers within the fiber optic plan, at no cost and with different degrees of improvements.
For example, for residential customers with the “Basic Fiber” The speed increase in the descent was 300%, while the increase in speed was 50%. On the other hand, for the plan “Ultra Fiber” the increase in the descent reached 33% and in the rise it reached 400%. From the company, they highlighted that this was possible due to the plan that was carried out to replace 300,000 routers in the homes of their clients.
Likewise, the state telephone works with the company vmware to test the platform telcocloud in the construction of the 5G architecture necessary to open the possibility of offering this service in the country, in one of the three spectrums that the government will tender in April.
