The National Rehabilitation Institute (INR) confirmed that the former presidential custodian will return to the Florida jail, where he will also be able to carry out work activities.
The former head of the president’s security Luis Lacalle Pou and protagonist of one of the biggest scandals of today in Uruguay, Alejandro Astesiano, will be transferred again on this occasion to the unit 19 —known as Jail Florida-, as confirmed by National Rehabilitation Institute (INR).
According to the body of Ministry of Interior, the change of establishment in which Astesiano will serve the sentence of four and a half years in prison for the continued crimes of conjunction of personal and public interest, criminal association, disclosure of secrets and influence peddling in the cause of passport adulteration ; is given for “security and rehabilitation reasons” after a resolution of the National Board of Transfers.
The transfer request had been raised by Astesiano’s lawyer, Marcos Prietoto the Public ministry after the sentence was known during the abbreviated trial that they agreed with Alexander Asteggiante, the judge of the case. And, finally, on Tuesday the resolution was signed by the director of the INR, Louis Mendoza.
Astesiano’s previous passage through Florida
The ex-custodian had already been confined in the Florida jail during his pretrial detention period, before the trial and during the investigation by the prosecutor Gabriela Fossati; but in November he had requested a change to another unit, to “avoid problems with inmates who were present in other prisons,” a change that was agreed to and for which he was referred to rail tip.
At that time, the Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber, He assured that the change was due to issues of “internal management” and was located in a sector for those who were in pretrial detention.
One of the reasons behind this new transfer would also be that Astesiano wants to carry out work activities, something that, in addition, would contribute to the reduction of his sentence.
