Finland’s President Sauli Niinisto signed the laws on the country’s entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) last night during a government meeting, according to the broadcast of the ceremony.
According to the session’s agenda, the president signed the “Government Proposal for the approval and entry into force of the North Atlantic Treaty and the Agreement on the Statute of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, of National Representatives and Staff” .
This was the final step in the ratification of all the necessary documents at the national level.
After the start of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, on February 24, 2022, Finland and Sweden submitted their applications for NATO membership to the bloc’s secretary general on May 18 last year, the news agency reported. Sputnik.
Sweden and Finland signed the protocols for joining the war bloc on July 5, 2022, which still need to be ratified by the 30 member countries.
To date, only Hungary and Turkey have not endorsed the accession process of the two Nordic countries.
However, on the 17th of this month Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that the country’s Parliament began the process of ratifying Finland’s application to join NATO.
On the other hand, the Swedish parliament gave the go-ahead yesterday for the country’s entry into NATO, so now the approval of the legislative bodies of the other member nations remains for the formal incorporation of Stockholm.
The Swedish Government thus received the green light from the Riksdag, the local Congress, to move towards annexation to NATO and also approve a series of legislative changes that will come into force when the Executive considers it appropriate and aim at, in the event of war, to be able to request help directly from the alliance without the need to submit the decision to a vote in the Legislature.
