After the approval of the promotion of the impeachment against him, the mayor of Montevideo, Caroline Cosseannounced this Friday that submit your defenses in writing “within the corresponding period” –10 days counting from March 21–, although she called the accusation “insane” and maintained that they are not against her, but against her political project.
The formal request of the councilors of the National Party and the Colorado party was made in October 2022. According to local legislators, the mayor did not appear before the Departmental Board on several occasions. Now, the Commission of Constitution and Legislation of the Chamber of Senators approved the promotion of this political trial and the departmental head must appear.
In response to this resolution, the mayor declared: “I will answer in writing. It is what we have valued with my team, what is written is written, and we have the firmness of conviction enough to think that this is the best”.
In this sense, he added: “We are going to give all the arguments that are applicable to this case because it is totally out of line with the lawruns over the institutions and, furthermore, it has no foundations”.
For Cosse, there has been no “no constitutional violation” by his administration, since he has responded to all the requests for reports made by the opposition councilors and has delegated his representation before the Departmental Board to the “highest hierarchies”.
Cosse treated the accusation of the opposition councilors as “insane”
“They took a political definition of going ahead. The most mature decision was that this should have been ‘no place’“said the hierarch in an interview with Radio Monte Carlo.
Regarding the grounds of the accusation, Cosse described them as “crazy”. According to her, every time there is a summons to the Departmental Board, the mayor can assess whether to attend or be represented by the highest hierarchy.
“We evaluated having ourselves represented. The important thing is that the information we had was that we had 100% of the reports answered. The ediles did not enter the room to listen to the information, except for two ediles from the Colorado Party. The other mayors of the opposition in Montevideo are not interested in the information, ”he said.
For the mayor, the “attack” is not against her, but towards the Broad Front
Cosse also suggested that this political trial is part of a strategy to attack his political project. “I think that The attacks are not against me, they are against the Broad Front project“, held.
The mayor mentioned as examples of this strategy the attacks of some ministers of the national government during the electoral campaign and the “pseudo-audit” of Antel. Cosse stated: “I am convinced that we will not be distracted. The Municipality of Montevideo is interested in information, and transparency is more interesting. We have answered thousands of requests for access to public information.”
