In the discussion about a planned refugee quarters in a former hotel at the Linz main station, the state police department said on Monday that the patrol activities in the area would be increased when it went into operation. For the police in Upper Austria, “the location makes perfect sense from an operational point of view”. From the point of view of the executive, the “existing infrastructure with the ‘Police Inspectorate (PI) Aliens Police Central Station'” also speak in favor of a refugee quarters in the hotel, which was closed at the turn of the year.
In an open letter, Linz Mayor Klaus Luger (SP) asked Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (VP) to cancel the contracts for the planned asylum accommodation in the former Ibis Hotel in Linz. As reported, up to 300 refugees are to be quartered there.
On Monday, the Federal Agency for Care and Support Services (BBU) commented on Luger’s demands. It is currently planned to accommodate only 100 people. The lease is limited to the end of the year, an extension is excluded. In addition, the BBU will also employ social workers, psychologists, nursing staff and security forces trained in Linz. Residents are encouraged to carry out German and values courses, sporting and other leisure activities as well as unskilled work in the house. “We are convinced that strangers should not be demonized from the outset. Experience shows that the fears will not be confirmed after a few weeks of normal operation,” says BBU Managing Director Andreas Achrainer.
The police also announced on Monday that they were in close contact with the BBU and that by unlocking the federal basic service facility, both the PI Immigration Police Station and the PI Bürgerstraße would be increased in terms of personnel.
